How to use the Songs & Carols pages

There are many Christmas carols from all over the country which differ from those normally heard these days at Christmas.  Most places in England and elsewhere had their own local carols and versions of carols.  One carol, “While Shepherds Watched”, appears to have been sung differently in nearly every village!

Gloucestershire is rich in Christmas carols that have come to us through the oral tradition.  Two of these, “The Holly and the Ivy” and “The Gloucestershire Wassail” are known and sung worldwide but these well-known carols varied within Gloucestershire from place to place

This site will enable you to discover carols from Gloucestershire, perhaps even from your own location, and to take a copy to learn to sing at your local folk club, choir, Christmas social, family gathering, etc.
